Tasting Notes

Nose

Raisins, fig roll, dark cherry, almond marzipan, cinnamon and a whisper of orange peel.

Palate

Rich and fruity — sultanas, blackberry compote, dark chocolate, walnut, vanilla and warming spice.

Finish

Long and sweet with dried fruit, oak tannin and a faint dusting of cocoa.

First Impressions

Released in 2018, The Story of the Spaniard is a blended malt Scotch that pays tribute to a Spaniard John Glaser met at a London bar — and to the influence of Spanish cask wood on Scotch whisky.

Distillery & Heritage

Compass Box was founded in 2000 by John Glaser, a former Johnnie Walker marketing director who set out to make blended Scotch interesting again. Based in Chiswick, London, the company is known for its transparent recipes, striking labels and storytelling approach.

Tasting Notes in Detail

The recipe centres on malts from Highland and Speyside distilleries, with the wine cask influence pushing the profile firmly into rich-fruit-and-spice territory. At 43% and non-chill-filtered with natural colour.

Verdict

One of the most rewarding sherried blended malts on the market.
