First Impressions
Despite the fearsome name, The Peat Monster is one of the most approachable smoky blended malts on the market. Bottled at 46%, non-chill-filtered, it's an introduction to peat that doesn't assault the palate.
Distillery & Heritage
Launched by John Glaser in 2003, The Peat Monster combines Islay heavyweights — predominantly Caol Ila and Laphroaig — with a generous slug of Highland malt (typically Ardmore) to round out the smoke. The recipe has evolved over the years but the philosophy stays the same: peat with personality, not just power.
Tasting Notes in Detail
The nose offers bonfire smoke and sea spray, smoked bacon, gentle iodine and a sweet vanilla undercurrent. The palate is medium-bodied, balancing sweet smoke and kippers with lemon oil, brine and soft orchard fruit. The finish is long, ashy and coastal with a sweet edge.
Verdict
The friendliest peat monster you'll ever meet. A beautifully balanced smoky blended malt and a benchmark of Compass Box's blending craft.
