Tasting Notes

Nose

Vanilla, bubblegum, confectioners' sugar, green apple, melon, yellow cake, light cornbread graininess — sweet and inviting

Palate

Silky and creamy — buttercream, coconut, toffee, milk chocolate, banana bread, walnut — sweet, syrupy mouthfeel

Finish

Short — candied fruit, lingering spice — the finish is the one weakness, fading faster than the nose and palate promise

First Impressions

Compass Box Hedonism — John Glaser's debut release in 2000. The first premium blended grain Scotch whisky. It proved that grain whisky, usually dismissed as neutral spirit, could be taken seriously.

Tasting

Sweet vanilla and bubblegum nose. Silky, creamy palate with buttercream, coconut, and banana bread. Short finish with candied fruit. The finish is the one weakness.

The Verdict

Compass Box Hedonism earns a 7.5 — a pioneering whisky that opened a category. At £65, the short finish limits the value, but the silky texture and elegant profile remain compelling. Glaser's first creation started a revolution.
