Collection Moon 8 Year Old

7.8 /10
EDITOR
Type: Blended Malt
Age: 8 Year Old
ABV: 43%
Price: £299.00

There's a particular kind of confidence required to price a blended malt at £299 with only eight years of age statement behind it. Collection Moon has that confidence, and having spent some time with this whisky, I'm inclined to say it's not entirely misplaced — though it does demand a conversation about what you're actually paying for.

Collection Moon 8 Year Old sits in an increasingly crowded premium blended malt space, a category that's been quietly reshaping how the industry thinks about Scotch. For years, blended malts were the awkward middle child — neither the prestige of a single malt nor the volume appeal of a blended Scotch. But brands like Compass Box proved there was serious money and serious quality to be found in thoughtful vatting, and Collection Moon appears to be following that playbook with a focus on presentation and curation over sheer age.

At 43% ABV, this is bottled just above the legal minimum for Scotch, which at this price point feels like a missed opportunity. I'd have liked to see 46% or even cask strength — it would have given the whisky more authority on the palate and signalled greater confidence in the liquid itself. That said, 43% is approachable, and there's something to be said for a whisky that doesn't require you to add water or think too hard about it.

Tasting Notes

Without confirmed distillery sources, we're tasting blind in terms of provenance — and honestly, that's part of the appeal for a certain kind of drinker. What I can say is that this is a blended malt that leans into its youth rather than trying to disguise it. Eight years is enough time for the spirit to develop genuine character without losing the vitality that older whiskies sometimes trade away for smoothness. Expect the kind of energy and brightness that comes with well-selected younger malt components, balanced by whatever cask programme Collection Moon has employed.

The Verdict

Here's where I land on this: Collection Moon 8 Year Old is a genuinely enjoyable blended malt that rewards attention. It's well-constructed, clearly the product of careful selection rather than bulk blending, and it drinks with a coherence that justifies its premium positioning — at least partially. The £299 price tag is steep for an 8-year-old, no question. You're paying for the brand experience, the packaging, and whatever curation story sits behind the vatting. Whether that represents value depends entirely on what you're looking for. If you want age for money, look elsewhere. If you want a modern, well-made blended malt from a brand doing something deliberately different in the category, Collection Moon delivers. I'm scoring this 7.8 out of 10 — a strong showing that loses half a mark on the ABV and another fraction on the price-to-age ratio, but earns it back on quality of execution and drinkability.

Best Served

Pour this neat in a Glencairn at room temperature and give it ten minutes to open up. The lower ABV means it doesn't need water, and adding ice would flatten exactly the characteristics that make it interesting. If you're feeling sociable, it also works beautifully in a minimalist Rob Roy — sweet vermouth and a dash of Angostura will complement the malt's youthful energy without burying it. At this price, though, I'd keep it neat and make every dram count.
