Tasting Notes

Nose

Warm waves of marzipan, leather, Ceylon tea. Dried spices, tobacco and sandalwood — precious cargo aromas reminiscent of the East. The first-fill oloroso adds richness.

Palate

Bright complexities — orange peel, rich dark cherries and treacle. The four component malts from Highland and Speyside contribute fruit and grain, unified by the oloroso sherry maturation.

Finish

Dry at first, then gliding into lingering spicy notes with hints of an old leather armchair. A composed, characterful close.

Clydebuilt Shipwright is the second release in Ardgowan's limited-edition series — blending four single malts from Highland and Speyside distilleries, all matured in first-fill oloroso sherry casks. Limited to 750 cases worldwide, it showcases Max McFarlane's blending expertise with a distinctive Eastern-spice character.

The oloroso maturation provides the unifying element, but it is the Eastern spice character — sandalwood, Ceylon tea, leather — that distinguishes Shipwright from its siblings. Where Coppersmith is butterscotch and chocolate, and Sailmaker is dried fruit and orange, Shipwright goes in a more exotic, spice-market direction.

Clydebuilt Shipwright demonstrates the breadth of Max McFarlane's blending vision. Each Clydebuilt release takes the same fundamental approach — multiple malts, first-fill oloroso — but arrives at a different flavour destination. The Shipwright is the most unusual and atmospheric of the series, and the limited production (750 cases) adds genuine scarcity.
