Tasting Notes

Nose

Dark fruit compote, furniture polish, lemon curd. Figs, leather and old books. A surprisingly complex nose for a single grain — the fifteen years of bourbon maturation create genuine depth.

Palate

Dry and moreish — butterscotch, five spice, mint chocolate chip and brown sugar. The fifteen years have given the grain spirit genuine character and weight. At 50%, excellent body for a grain whisky.

Finish

Lingering, lovely and very smooth. Dries down slowly.

Clydebuilt Riveter marks a departure for Ardgowan's Clydebuilt series — the first single grain release after three blended malts. Fifteen casks sourced from a Lowland grain distillery, each matured in bourbon barrels for fifteen years, were selected by master whisky maker Max McFarlane. At 50%, it is the highest-proof Clydebuilt release.

Fifteen years transform grain whisky. Where young grain is typically neutral and characterless, the extended bourbon-cask maturation has developed genuine flavour — dark fruit, butterscotch, leather, old books. The 50% strength gives the grain spirit body and presence that few single grains achieve.

Riveter demonstrates that aged grain whisky can be a destination worth exploring. Max McFarlane's cask selection has identified grain casks of genuine quality, and the Clydebuilt presentation gives them a platform they deserve. An unexpected and welcome addition to the series.
