Tasting Notes

Nose

Complex and inviting — the marriage of 25-year-old malt with younger oloroso-matured components creates genuine depth. Dark fruit, sherry warmth, a gentle spice.

Palate

Mouth-watering — toast with juicy blackcurrant jam, subtle allspice, dark red fruits, herbal hints. The eight-distillery blend and the aged malt component add breadth and a composed maturity unusual for a NAS blend.

Finish

A one hundred metre dash — a slow start building to a supercharged, explosive finish. Arguably the most dynamic close in the Clydebuilt series.

Clydebuilt Draughtsman is the final release in Ardgowan's award-winning Clydebuilt collection — a blended malt combining oloroso-matured malts from eight Scottish distilleries with 25-year-old sherry-matured malt whisky. Max McFarlane's most ambitious composition brings the series to a fitting conclusion.

The inclusion of 25-year-old malt gives Draughtsman a maturity and depth that the earlier releases cannot match. The aged component adds a composed, polished quality to the younger oloroso-matured malts, and the eight-distillery breadth creates genuine complexity. The finish — building from a slow start to an explosive crescendo — is one of the most dynamic in any blended malt.

As the final Clydebuilt release, Draughtsman represents the culmination of Max McFarlane's blending vision. Each release in the series explored a different dimension of sherried blended malt, and Draughtsman brings the most ambitious components — aged malt, eight distilleries — to a grand finale. A fitting conclusion to an impressive series.
