Tasting Notes

Nose

Black cherries, lemon drizzle cake, chocolate raisins. Sesame oil, sticky figs and dates. A well-balanced and distinctive opening from the first-fill oloroso maturation.

Palate

Full-bodied, floral and plummy — ripe dark fruits, roast chestnuts, pomegranate juice and overripe bananas. The six component malts create genuine breadth, with the sherry cask providing a unifying richness.

Finish

Long and lightly tannic with Earl Grey tea and orange marmalade. A composed, gently drying close.

Clydebuilt Anchorsmith is the second release in Ardgowan Distillery's limited-edition blended malt series. Where Coppersmith used four distilleries, Anchorsmith expands to six — drawing malt from Lowland, Speyside and Highland producers, each wholly matured in first-fill oloroso sherry casks. Master whisky maker Max McFarlane's selection and blending creates a sherried malt of genuine regional breadth.

The six-distillery approach gives Anchorsmith more complexity than its predecessor. The Lowland components add a lightness and floral quality, the Speyside malts contribute fruit and honey, and the Highland elements bring weight and structure. The first-fill oloroso ties everything together with dried fruit and a gentle tannic grip.

At 46%, non-chill-filtered and natural colour, Anchorsmith is presented with the care its composition deserves. The sherry influence is generous without being overwhelming, and the finish — lightly tannic, with Earl Grey and marmalade — shows a confidence in the blending that bodes well for Ardgowan's future. Another promising chapter in the Clydebuilt series.
