Tasting Notes

Nose

Honey, vanilla, crème brûlée, soft mint, fresh cornbread and a touch of orange blossom.

Palate

Silky and sweet — vanilla, honey, light caramel, gentle baking spice and a clean cereal note.

Finish

Medium, soft and gently spicy with lingering honey and mint.

First Impressions

For decades, Chita was the unsung backbone of Suntory's blends — particularly Hibiki — but never bottled in its own right. In 2015 Suntory finally released The Chita as a single grain whisky.

Distillery & Heritage

Founded in 1972 on Chita Peninsula in Aichi Prefecture, the distillery produces three styles of grain whisky — heavy, medium and clean — primarily from corn, distilled in continuous column stills. The single grain bottling is matured in a mix of American white oak, Spanish oak and wine casks.

Tasting Notes in Detail

The nose is gentle and pastry-like, all honey and vanilla cream with a green minty lift. The palate is silky and confectionery-sweet without being cloying.

Verdict

Chita is proof that grain whisky can be every bit as expressive as malt.
