Tasting Notes

Nose

Vanilla, oak, a gentle grape sweetness. The Cognac cask finishing adds a brandy warmth quite different from wine cask finishing. Subtle white pepper beneath.

Palate

Sweet and balanced — the Cognac influence adds warmth and a gentle grape-brandy quality. Rich, with the Romanian barley providing a clean foundation. Complex and well-integrated.

Finish

Long and complex. The Cognac influence sustains with gentle warmth and refined oak character.

Carpathian Single Malt Cognac Cask Finish adds French brandy barrel influence to the Romanian single malt range. Initially matured in first-fill bourbon casks, the whisky is then finished in casks from French Cognac production, adding a grape-brandy warmth that is both subtle and distinctive.

The Cognac finishing provides a different dimension from the wine cask finishes that dominate the Carpathian range. The brandy barrels contribute vanilla, dried grape and a warmth that is closer to spirit than wine — creating a whisky with a brandy-like sophistication.

The Cognac Cask Finish demonstrates the breadth of Carpathian's cask programme. Under Master Distiller Allan Anderson's guidance, the range explores an impressive variety of finishing casks — Romanian wine, Greek wine, Cognac — each revealing a different facet of the Romanian single malt character. The quality is genuine and the ambition admirable.
