Tasting Notes

Nose

Honey, apple, pear, vanilla, light malt, hints of caramel and oak — gentle and sweet

Palate

Smooth — sweet orchard fruits, cinnamon, ginger spice, mild peppery bite, gentle peat smoke — well-balanced, fresh, sweet attack then drying

Finish

Short but warm — lingering apple-pear spice, modest ashy note — the Johnnie Walker heart character visible

First Impressions

Cardhu 12 — founded 1824 by Helen Cumming, one of Scotch whisky's pioneering women. She used a red flag to warn fellow illicit distillers when excise officers approached. Cardhu is the heart malt of Johnnie Walker.

Tasting

Honey and apple nose. Smooth palate of orchard fruits with cinnamon and ginger. Short, warm finish with apple-pear spice. Gentle and crowd-pleasing.

The Verdict

Cardhu 12 earns a 7 — a gentle, fruit-forward Speyside at £32. Good for beginners, and the Helen Cumming heritage gives it genuine history. The Johnnie Walker heart, beating on its own.
