Tasting Notes

Nose

Honey, butterscotch, citrus orange. Heather honey, fresh vanilla pod, malted biscuit. Golden syrup, toffee, candied lemon and toasted hazelnut. Deep gold colour. Beautifully mature.

Palate

Oily texture with good viscosity yet delicate — malted barley, peaches, citrus, raspberry tartness. Floral, honey, subtle winey character, herbal, earthy, a hint of minerals. The Sauternes and port cask contributions add complexity beyond bourbon alone.

Finish

Tropical fruits and toasted mellow oak linger. Fairly long with light oak, malted barley and honey sweetness.

Bruichladdich Re/Define Eighteen is the distillery's first age-statement release in years — matured predominantly in bourbon casks with a smaller proportion of Sauternes and port casks, then vatted and married for nine months before bottling at 50%. Unpeated, uncoloured and non-chill-filtered, it presents Bruichladdich at genuine maturity.

Eighteen years reveal a different Bruichladdich from the youthful Classic Laddie. The honeyed, malty character has deepened and enriched, the coastal maritime influence has mellowed into a subtle mineral quality, and the wine cask contributions add winey, fruity layers that bourbon alone cannot provide. The balance and elegance come from sympathetic maturation in quality oak over nearly two decades.

Bruichladdich Eighteen Re/Define is superb — backing up boldness with the quiet confidence that only genuine maturity provides. The quality of the oak, the patience of the maturation, and the 50% presentation create an Islay malt of genuine distinction. Bruichladdich, grown up and magnificent.
