Type: Speyside
Age: 15 Year Old
ABV: 43%
Price: £65.25

Benrinnes has long been one of Speyside's quieter distilleries — the kind of place that serious whisky drinkers speak about with a knowing nod, while the wider market chases louder names. The 15 Year Old Flora & Fauna bottling is, for many of us, the most accessible way to experience what this distillery does well, and it remains one of the strongest entries in that iconic series.

The Flora & Fauna range was introduced by United Distillers in the early 1990s to showcase distilleries that rarely, if ever, appeared as official single malts. For Benrinnes, this 15 year old expression has become something of a benchmark — the bottle that defines the house character for a generation of enthusiasts. At 43% ABV, it sits just above the standard minimum, which gives it a touch more presence on the palate than your typical entry-level Speyside.

What to Expect

Benrinnes is not your typical light, floral Speyside. This is a distillery known for producing a heavier, more robust spirit — muscular where others are delicate, savoury where many lean sweet. Fifteen years of maturation rounds those edges, but the underlying weight and complexity remain. If you come to this expecting another Glenfiddich or Glenlivet, you will be pleasantly surprised by how much more there is going on.

At this age, you can expect a whisky that has had time to develop real depth. The spirit and the wood have had a proper conversation, and neither dominates the other. It strikes that balance between approachability and character that I find increasingly rare in official bottlings at this price point.

The Verdict

At £65.25, this is a whisky that punches well above its weight. Fifteen years of age, an honest 43% ABV, and the pedigree of a distillery that has quietly earned its reputation among those who pay attention — that is a compelling package. I have always felt Benrinnes deserves a wider audience, and this Flora & Fauna bottling is the perfect introduction.

I am giving it an 8 out of 10. It loses a point for being bottled without an age statement on some recent batches in the wider market, which can cause confusion, and another because at cask strength this spirit would truly sing. But as it stands, this is a serious Speyside single malt at a fair price, and one I would recommend without hesitation to anyone looking to explore beyond the usual names.

Best Served

Pour it neat and give it five minutes in the glass — Benrinnes rewards patience. Once it has opened up, add a small splash of water to unlock the mid-palate. This is not a whisky that needs ice or a mixer; it has enough weight and complexity to stand on its own. A classic dram for a quiet evening.
