First Impressions

When Rachel Barrie reimagined BenRiach's core range in 2020 after Brown-Forman's acquisition, The Original Ten became the new entry point — and immediately established itself as one of Speyside's most thoughtful 10-year-olds. The signature is bright orchard fruit, but there's structure beneath the sweetness that hints at the three-cask philosophy.

Distillery & Heritage

BenRiach was founded in 1898 near Elgin and spent decades silent before being revived in the modern era — first by Billy Walker, then under Brown-Forman's ownership from 2016. Master Blender Rachel Barrie, one of Scotch whisky's most respected figures, took the reins and rebuilt the range around a three-cask maturation philosophy: bourbon barrels for vanilla and sweetness, sherry casks for depth and fruit, and virgin oak for structure and spice. The Original Ten is the purest expression of that approach in the unpeated style.

Tasting Notes in Detail

The nose is generous and inviting: ripe orchard fruit, vanilla, honey, a twist of citrus zest, light baking spice and toasted oak. The palate delivers baked apple, honeycomb, apricot and vanilla cream, with gentle nutmeg and mellow oak adding shape. At 43% it has just enough weight to feel serious without sacrificing approachability. The finish is medium, fruity and clean with a soft spice fade.

Verdict

One of the best-value 10-year-old Speysiders on the market right now. Barrie's three-cask approach gives it more complexity than the price suggests, and it makes a perfect everyday dram or introduction to the BenRiach style.
