Tasting Notes

Nose

Sherry sweetness, dried cherry, dark chocolate. Rich and generous at cask strength, with the sherry influence providing dried fruit and a warm nuttiness. Beneath the sherry, the clean Arran malt — citrus, honey, a gentle floral quality.

Palate

Full-bodied and sherried — dark fruit, chocolate, a robust spice. The cask strength gives it real intensity, and the sherry influence is generous without being overwhelming. Mid-palate brings roasted nut, toffee and a warming sweetness. Water opens tropical fruit.

Finish

Long, with sherry warmth, dark fruit and a gentle oak sweetness.

Isle of Arran Distillery was founded in 1995 by Harold Currie — the youngest distillery on the island (until Lagg opened in 2019) — and has built a reputation for clean, fruity, high-quality single malt that consistently overdelivers for its price. The Sherry Cask expression is matured in first-fill oloroso sherry hogsheads and bottled at cask strength, presenting the full force of the sherry influence on Arran's naturally bright, fruity spirit.

The cask strength presentation is the key to this whisky's appeal. At over 55%, the sherry influence arrives with real intensity — dark fruit, chocolate, a robust spice — while the underlying Arran spirit provides enough citrus brightness and malty sweetness to prevent the wood from dominating. The balance is impressive for a non-age-statement, cask-strength release.

Arran Sherry Cask is one of the best-value sherried, cask-strength single malts in Scotland. The combination of quality spirit, generous sherry maturation and honest bottling at full strength produces a whisky that competes with sherried releases from more prestigious distilleries at two or three times the price. For sherry enthusiasts on a budget, this is essential drinking.
