Tasting Notes

Nose

Tar, brine, smoked bacon and a sharp lemon zest cut through clouds of bonfire smoke.

Palate

Aggressive peat reek, black pepper, pine resin and a salted-caramel sweetness from the oloroso influence.

Finish

Long, ashy and oily — a charcoal grip that refuses to let go.

Released in 2020 as the youngest core expression in the Ardbeg range, Wee Beastie was conceived as a deliberately untamed introduction to the Kildalton style. At five years old it sits below the Ten in age but well above it in pugnacity, bottled at 47.4% ABV with neither chill filtration nor caramel colouring.

The maturation regime is a straightforward marriage of first-fill ex-bourbon and oloroso sherry casks. The bourbon wood supplies the vanilla and citrus framework while the oloroso adds a darker, slightly meaty edge that prevents the spirit from feeling raw. Master distiller Bill Lumsden has spoken of wanting an expression that captured Ardbeg in its rawest, most adolescent form, and the bottling rather lives up to its name.

Distilled at the Ardbeg distillery on the south coast of Islay — a site that traces its licensed history to 1815 and was famously rescued by Glenmorangie plc in 1997 — Wee Beastie carries the house's signature heavy phenolic load of around 55ppm in the malt. What it lacks in cask-driven complexity it compensates for with sheer intensity.

For the price, it offers an honest, unvarnished snapshot of young Islay malt and serves as a useful counterpoint to the older, more polished Uigeadail and Corryvreckan in the range. A fine choice for highballs or for drinkers who find the Ten too restrained.
