Tasting Notes

Nose

Maritime peat, dark chocolate, dried fruit. The nineteen years have mellowed the peat into something more refined — still intense, still Ardbeg, but wrapped in sherry richness. Beneath the smoke, coffee, leather and a briny elegance.

Palate

Rich and complex — peated and sherried in a magnificent partnership. Smoke, dark fruit, espresso, a gentle oiliness. The peat has evolved from youthful aggression into a mature, layered intensity. Mid-palate brings dark chocolate, roasted nut and a savoury depth that sustains beautifully.

Finish

Very long, with peated elegance and sherry warmth alternating in a slow, satisfying fade.

Traigh Bhan — named for the 'singing sands' beach near the distillery — is Ardbeg's age-statement premium expression, matured for 19 years in a combination of American oak and oloroso sherry casks. Released in annual batches, each varying slightly in character, it represents Ardbeg at its most mature and refined. The peat that defines Ardbeg — intense, maritime, medicinal — is still unmistakably present, but nineteen years have transformed it from a shout into a conversation.

The marriage of aged peat and oloroso sherry is the achievement here. The sherry adds layers of dried fruit, chocolate and richness that complement the smoke rather than competing with it. The peat, mellowed by nearly two decades of maturation, has developed a complexity and depth that younger Ardbeg expressions can only hint at. This is peated whisky as meditation rather than assault.

Traigh Bhan is one of the finest age-statement peated whiskies available. At its premium price, it competes with the most celebrated aged Islay expressions, and the quality of each batch has been consistently exceptional. For Ardbeg devotees, it demonstrates what their beloved distillery can achieve with time and patience. For anyone curious about what happens when Islay peat grows up, Traigh Bhan provides the most eloquent answer.
