Tasting Notes

Nose

Powerful and peaty — orange marmalade, oysters, barbecue bacon, mango, lime juice, maritime intensity, the French oak adding exotic spice notes beneath the peat

Palate

Torrents of taste — chewy peppered steak in pepper sauce, crispy seaweed, black tarry espresso coating the palate, melted dark fruits of blackcurrant, blueberry, cherry, bitter almond, the 57.1% adding enormous power

Finish

Coffee, white pepper, leather — French oak, hickory-smoked meat, long and intense, the whirlpool finally releasing its grip slowly

First Impressions

Named for the Corryvreckan whirlpool — one of the world's most dangerous — between Jura and Scarba. French oak casks (virgin and wine) plus ex-bourbon at 57.1%. 50-55 PPM of peatiness. A vortex of flavour.

Tasting

The nose is powerful peat with marmalade, oysters, and barbecue bacon. On the palate at 57.1%, espresso, dark fruits, and peppered steak. The finish is coffee and leather.

The Verdict

Ardbeg Corryvreckan earns a 9 — the whirlpool in a glass. French oak adds exotic spice to Ardbeg's peat. At £70, maximum intensity from Islay's most peated distillery.
