Tasting Notes

Nose

Lemon citrus, honey, peanut butter, phenolic peat smoke, clotted cream, figgy pudding, sea air — soft but distinctly Ardbeg

Palate

Soft and oily — citrus and peat interplay with butterscotch, white chocolate, sherbet sweetness beneath — the Gathering Vat smoothing the edges

Finish

Long and juicy — hickory smoke fading into floral honey, salted caramel, charred oak — a softer Ardbeg without losing the soul

First Impressions

Ardbeg An Oa — named after the Mull of Oa headland on Islay's southwest. First addition to the core range in over a decade (2017). Married in a bespoke 'Gathering Vat' where PX sherry, charred new oak, and bourbon cask whiskies meld in French oak.

Tasting

Lemon and peat smoke nose with honey and clotted cream. Soft, oily palate with butterscotch and white chocolate beneath the peat. Long, juicy finish with hickory smoke and salted caramel.

The Verdict

Ardbeg An Oa earns an 8 — a softer, more approachable Ardbeg that doesn't lose the distillery's soul. At £48 and 46.6%, excellent value. The Gathering Vat concept genuinely works. For those who find the Ten too intense, An Oa is the gentle handshake.
