Tasting Notes

Nose

Toffee, vanilla, sugary caramel, orange zest, sweet raisins, floral notes, spicy nuttiness, fruity pastries — the double cask creating layers

Palate

Smooth and creamy — vanilla, dried fruits, raisins, figs, dried apple, cherry, strawberry, nutmeg, cinnamon, sweet red plums, slight bitter oak

Finish

Warming, medium-long — sweet plums and raisins lingering with gentle oak and spice — the 16 years of double maturation paying off

First Impressions

Aberlour 16 Double Cask — bourbon and Oloroso sherry double maturation. A genuine step up from the 12. The newer 40% bottling slightly diminishes what was once a 43% expression.

Tasting

Toffee and caramel nose. Creamy palate of dried fruits, cinnamon, and plums. Warming finish with raisins and gentle oak. Double cask balance is the signature.

The Verdict

Aberlour 16 earns a 7.5 — solid Speyside with good sherry influence at £58. The 40% ABV holds it back from greatness. If you find the 43% bottling, snap it up.
