Whiskey War Double Double Oaked at 56.75% ABV — the question is whether it delivers on its promise. I sat down with a pour to find out.
Palate
Like many rye whiskeys, Im greeted with a strong baseline of oak wood. As the profile opens up, though, I can pick out notes of allspice, stewed tea, and the earthy sweetness of clover honey. While over 100 proof, the burn of alcohol is relatively light and never overwhelms the flavors. When the swallow passes, I enjoy a finish of maraschino cherry and cigar box wood. For all of Whiskey Wars explosive branding, I found their Double Double Oaked whiskey to be a pleasantly balanced spirit. While it has the kick of a high proof spirit, its light burn and complex flavor profile are suitable for sipping. Still, theres nothing about its flavor so distinctive that Id be unwilling to use it as a mixer. This holds it back from my highest rating, but I still find this to be an excellent entry in any cabinet.
