There is a lot to like about St. George 40th Anniversary Edition Single Malt Whiskey on paper. At 48% ABV, mash bill: 100% two-row malted barley, SR and $500/ 750ml bottle, let us see if it lives up to expectations.
Nose
This is golden orange in color with an undertone of mahogany. I had mixed feelings about this spirit until I tried it with a slight chill. At room temperature, neat, my preferred drinking style, the hoppy-tropical-bitterness overwhelms the palate. With a light chill, the aromatics seem to open up. A dash of water doesnt seem to add to the experience, so I preferred this cooled in the fridge or with a whiskey stone. Theres so much going on at a variety of temperatures that this promises to never be a tiring pour for the palate.
Palate
This opens with a note of freshly sliced apples and tropical fruits accented with a touch of anise and black strap molasses. This gives me the impression of spiced rum, with cola spice and hot pepper hints. Theres a touch of green fruit like green pineapple, star fruit, and bittering hops. The Bottom Line
St. George 40th Anniversary Edition Single Malt Whiskey delivers the goods. It is well-made, genuinely enjoyable, and at $500/ 750ml bottle represents solid value for what you are getting. I would happily buy this again.
