Orphan Barrel Scarlet Shade landed on my desk at 45% ABV), aged 14 years in white oak barrels, 750m, carrying a $249 price tag. With 14 years in white oak barrels of age behind it, Here is what I found.
Nose
This rye whiskey has a lovely reddish amber tint. There is a very sweet touch that hits your nose, followed by a lovely oak scent.
Palate
This rye is definitely sweet and smooth on the tongue, with a touch of vanilla and mixed berries, with a hint of oakiness, and a finish of chocolate.
Finish
This is a very lovely rye whiskey. It is very smooth, and extremely flavorful for a rye whiskey. This is a fantastic choice for drinking straight or on the rocks. I think the finish is very nice, with the touch of chocolate finish that lingers long after youve finished a drink. Very highly recommended.
The Bottom Line
Orphan Barrel Scarlet Shade is outstanding — one of those bottles that reminds you why you fell in love with whiskey in the first place. If you see it at $249, do not hesitate. This one earns a permanent spot on the shelf.
