It is aged in new American Oak barrels that were cold-smoked with aged cigar tobacco leaves from Kentucky. It incorporates a four-year-old Indiana rye that’s finished in level #1 Char barrels, similar to the process used with their Char #1 Rye Straight Rye Whiskey. All of this brings out flavors that pair well with the aged cigar flavor profile. In a prepared statement, Buzzard’s Roost Co-founder and CEO Judy Hollis Jones said, “This expression showcases the skills of our blending and barrel team, who had a very intentional flavor profile in mind for this rye. It’s especially nice paired with a fine cigar.” Only three barrels were produced for the first launch in the Spring, but more will be released in the Fall. It has a nice complexity in that it’s successfully both spicy and sweet, with a velvety mouthfeel and flavorful medium-length finish. Overall, the complex flavor profile is nicely balanced, making this a satisfying whiskey experience. Score: 4.5/5 Tasting Notes: Buzzard’s Roost Barrel Strength Straight Bourbon Whiskey Buzzard’s Roost’s Barrel Strength Straight Bourbon Whiskey, released in 2021, was the company’s first bourbon and was included in Paste magazine’s Top 15 Whiskeys of 2021. Created from a blend of four to six-year-old MGP bourbons from two different high-rye mash bills and then aged in new, proprietary oak barrels, it is secondary cask matured and has been crafted for sipping on its own or for use in cocktails. Buzzard’s Roost’s Barrel Strength Straight Bourbon Whiskey was a Gold medal winner at the 2022 San Francisco World Spirits Competition. Vital Stats: Mash bill is a blend of two MGP bourbons: 60% corn, 36% rye and 4% malted barley; and 75% corn, 21% rye and 4% malted barley, 114.4 proof (57.2% ABV), secondary cask matured, bottled in Kentucky, 750 ml, MSRP $83. Appearance: Burnished copper. Nose: On the nose this whiskey is reminiscent of a red wine with its dark red berry and dark fruit notes, as well as vanilla bean. Palate: The palate offers a decadent range of flavors from cinnamon and clove to a malty smokiness and hints of woody vanilla. Final Thoughts: Overall it is well balanced with an inviting moderate heat on the nose. The texture is light with a medium-length finish. Although it was very close, this was my favorite of the three. Score: 4.5/5
